Firefighter Injured in Orange County Freeway Crash Transferred to Specialized Rehab Facility
In a significant show of support, a firefighter injured during a severe rollover accident on an Orange County freeway last month received a heartfelt send-off as he was transferred to a specialized rehabilitation hospital in Colorado. Andrew Brown, a firefighter with the Orange County Fire Authority's Santiago Hand Crew 1, was among eight firefighters injured in the accident on September 19 on the 241 toll road near SR-133 in Irvine. The crew was returning from combating the Airport Fire when their vehicle swerved to avoid a ladder on the road, causing it to hit a guardrail and overturn.
The incident, which occurred just before 7 p.m., resulted in seven firefighters being transported to the hospital by ambulance, and one being airlifted from the scene. The accident profoundly impacted the fire department, with OCFA Chief Brian Fennessy acknowledging the long recovery journey ahead for many of the injured.
By October 2, four firefighters remained hospitalized, with two, including Brown, being transferred to rehabilitation facilities. Brown's move to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, renowned for its neurorehabilitation programs for spinal injuries, was marked by a procession of firefighters and medical staff, demonstrating the tight-knit community's solidarity. Upon arrival in Colorado, Brown was greeted by more firefighters, underscoring the widespread support from the firefighting community.
Another firefighter from the same crew was moved to Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center in Downey, indicating the severe and lasting impact of the crash on the firefighters involved. The OCFA, along with other firefighter associations, has been pivotal in supporting the injured firefighters through their recovery, highlighting the importance of community and professional support in times of crisis.
The incident not only underscores the risks firefighters take daily but also the unpredictable dangers they face, even when not directly fighting fires. It's a stark reminder of the perilous nature of their work and the importance of community and professional support systems in aiding recovery from such traumatic events.
