Accident on I-8

A wrong-way driver on Interstate 8 collided head-on with a vehicle on Saturday night, and then was struck by another vehicle while attempting to flee, authorities reported. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 24-year-old man from National City driving a Toyota Tundra was traveling westbound in the wrong direction on I-8 from Fletcher Parkway around 11:40 p.m. The driver allegedly crashed head-on into a Honda Civic, approximately two miles west of Fletcher Parkway. At the time of the collision, the Honda was in the left eastbound lane, just east of 70th Street, according to the CHP. The driver of the Honda, a 33-year-old man from Montebello, California, was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego with serious injuries. After the crash, CHP said the Toyota driver attempted to flee from the eastbound lanes. According to authorities, he ran across the westbound lanes and was fatally struck by a black Ford F-150 pickup truck. The occupants of the Ford, a man and a woman, were not injured. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs were a factor regarding the wrong-way driver, CHP said. However, driving under the influence was not a factor for the other two involved drivers. On Sunday afternoon, just before 5 p.m., Caltrans re-closed three lanes on I-8 in both directions as they continue to investigate the accident, as shown in the photo below. An investigation into the accident is still ongoing. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 619-235-8477.
