Several people were taken to the hospital Sunday night after a head-on collision involving three vehicles in San Marcos, authorities reported. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. near South Santa Fe Avenue and North Rancho Santa Fe Road. Witnesses reported that a blue Honda SUV was traveling in the wrong direction in the eastbound lanes of South Santa Fe Avenue and collided with a red Honda SUV and a white Toyota sedan, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department in a press release.
Inside the red Honda SUV were a 24-year-old father, a 22-year-old mother, and their baby, agents reported. The parents were transported to Palomar Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the baby, who was not injured at the scene of the accident, was taken to Rady Children's Hospital as a precaution, according to the SDSO.
The 46-year-old Toyota driver was evaluated by paramedics and discharged, authorities said.
The wrong-way driver, a 29-year-old man, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to agents, who added that they have not yet spoken with the wrong-way driver.
Authorities are still investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. At this time, the SDSO says no one has been arrested.
Due to the crash, authorities closed South Santa Fe Avenue between North Rancho Santa Fe Road and South Las Flores Street and asked people to avoid the area, the department said in a post on X.
