A man was seriously injured on Sunday morning after attempting to stop a suspect who, according to authorities, had stolen his vehicle in Coronado. The Coronado Police Department received a call around 5:20 a.m. informing them that a man was on the hood of a brown sedan driving on Orange Avenue. The individual was reportedly screaming.
Shortly after, the police received another call reporting that a man was on the hood of a vehicle again, this time near the Toll Plaza area. The informant notified authorities that a crash had occurred.
According to the department, the driver of the vehicle and a passenger were seen fleeing the scene on foot.
Officers who arrived at the scene found the vehicle facing eastbound in lanes near the Toll Plaza, where it had reportedly collided with the concrete toll structure.
A 33-year-old man was found injured in the adjacent lane with injuries described as potentially fatal. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but his current condition is unknown.
The driver, identified as an 18-year-old, was found shortly after the accident with a young female passenger on the access road to the bridge.
According to the police department, the teenagers allegedly stole the vehicle from the owner, the man who is now hospitalized. The owner got on the hood of the car in an attempt to stop them, according to the Coronado police.
Authorities report that the 18-year-old driver was arrested. He faces charges of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, vehicle theft, hit-and-run with serious injuries, and attempted murder, according to the Coronado police.
It is unclear if charges will be filed against the passenger in connection with the incident. However, additional charges are expected as the investigation progresses.
Residents were shocked by the incident, given the relatively calm nature of the neighborhood.
"It's very sad, and Coronado has always been so safe," said one resident to FOX 5 after the accident. "To hear what happened, it's really unbelievable."
