Lucian Li, a standout lacrosse athlete and graduate of Manheim Township High School, tragically passed away on Tuesday night at a hospital in Chester County, as confirmed by a family spokesperson on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old Li was driving when his vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver on Route 202 in Chester County in the early hours of July 14. Li sustained severe injuries and was transported to Paoli Hospital, where he remained until his passing.
Li's family, through a spokesperson, confirmed that he was taken off life support around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. A statement issued on behalf of the family indicated that loved ones, friends, and hospital staff gathered at the hospital and accompanied Li to the operating room, where the medical team prepared his organs for donation, in accordance with Li's wishes.
"The Li family is grateful for all the support from relatives, friends, and the community, as well as all the emergency personnel, first responders, and Paoli Hospital's medical team for their incredible care," the statement said.
The other driver involved in the Friday accident was Matthew DeAngelis, a 42-year-old resident of Delaware County. He was driving a truck in the wrong direction when he collided with Li's car. DeAngelis succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.
The two passengers in Li's car were his teammates from the Kenyon College lacrosse team. Both are reported to be in critical but stable condition at the hospital. Their names have not been disclosed.
Hundreds of people gathered at a sports field in the Manheim Township School District on Tuesday night to pay tribute to Li. Attendees shared memories as the scoreboard displayed his jersey number, 21.
Li was recognized as a star player in the Lancaster-Lebanon Lacrosse League in Section One as a long-stick midfielder in 2021 and 2022. He was preparing to begin his sophomore year at Kenyon College, located in Gambier, Ohio.
Celestino Limas, Vice President for Student Affairs at Kenyon, expressed his condolences on Wednesday: "Lucian was someone who sought out everything Kenyon had to offer during his time with us... Moments like this deeply impact our community because of the closeness we have as a campus, and we mourn the devastating loss for Lucian's family and friends."
