An Orcutt resident was taken into custody early Sunday morning after being involved in a tragic accident on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo County, which resulted in the death of a man from Santa Maria, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The incident took place around 2:10 a.m. at the junction of Highway 101 and Highway 166. It was reported that a 20-year-old Orcutt male, who was allegedly intoxicated and speeding, failed to stop his Honda in time for halted traffic ahead.
The collision occurred when his vehicle slammed into the back of a 2012 Nissan Altima. The impact was so severe that it caused the Nissan, driven by a 30-year-old Santa Maria man, to overturn and hit a black GMC Sierra in front of it. The Honda then continued its destructive path southward into a dirt and grass median, where it also collided with a Chrysler Pacifica.
Emergency services transported the driver of the Nissan to Marian Regional Medical Center, where he tragically passed away due to his injuries.
Following the incident, the young driver from Orcutt was arrested and has been charged, though his name has yet to be released. Authorities believe that alcohol was a major contributing factor to the fatal collision.
