In a tragic incident just past downtown San Diego, a fatal accident occurred when a vehicle collided with a cement barrier and descended a hillside off Interstate 5 on Sunday night.
The accident, involving a single car, took place near the Imperial Avenue off-ramp from the southbound lanes of I-5 around 9:10 p.m. Reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicate that a Kia Soul struck a cement barrier before tumbling down an embankment and crashing into some brush. The vehicle then struck a transformer, which reportedly collided with a pedestrian near the off-ramp.
Authorities, including a significant number of police officers, responded to the scene. The Imperial Avenue off-ramp and Cesar Chavez Parkway were subsequently closed to traffic to facilitate the recovery of the vehicle. Despite efforts, the off-ramp remained shut as late as 10:30 p.m., as per Caltrans.
San Diego Fire-Rescue reported that one individual sustained injuries in the incident and received on-site treatment from firefighters. Unfortunately, the CHP confirmed that the victim succumbed to their injuries by 10:20 p.m.
