Fatal Collision in Aptos:
APTOS, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Santa Cruz is investigating a deadly crash on Freedom Boulevard, east of McDonald Road, that occurred on Saturday morning. The crash happened around 7:35 a.m. A 49-year-old man was heading east at an undetermined speed in a red 2017 Honda CRV, while 23-year-old Santa Cruz resident Luke Thomas Salem was driving westbound on the same road in a white 1966 Chrysler Newport. For reasons still under investigation, the CHP said the vehicles collided head-on. Despite life-saving measures, Salem was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The driver of the Honda suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The CHP stated that the cause of the accident is under investigation, and it is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol played a role. A portion of Freedom Boulevard was shut down following the crash; the road was reopened after several hours.Location: Freedom Boulevard, Aptos, CA
