Tragedy in Upland
In Upland, a nighttime police pursuit ended in tragedy when a stolen 2018 Hyundai collided with a Ford Mustang at the intersection of 16th Street and Mountain Avenue.
The incident began in Rancho Cucamonga around 2 a.m., when an officer attempted to stop the Hyundai driver suspected of driving under the influence. The Hyundai driver did not stop, as reported by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. The pursuit continued into Upland, where the Hyundai, traveling west on 16th Street, violently crashed into the northbound Ford Mustang on Mountain Avenue.
The impact was so severe that the Hyundai split into three parts upon striking a light pole, scattering debris throughout the area. Gloria Huerta, spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, confirmed that all four occupants of the Hyundai were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Among the victims was a young person, possibly as young as 13 years old, who was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Although transported to a hospital, specific details about their injuries have not yet been provided.
Additionally, a loaded firearm was found inside the Hyundai, further complicating the situation and the ongoing investigation by local authorities. On the other hand, two individuals traveling in the Mustang were also injured and were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
This tragic incident has shocked the local community, adding to another fatal accident that same morning in Monterey Park, where three people lost their lives in a high-speed crash. Police continue to investigate the exact circumstances that led to this devastating crash in Upland.
