Accident in Hemet
A 23-year-old driver, allegedly speeding and not wearing a seatbelt, tragically died after losing control of his vehicle and colliding with oncoming traffic Thursday night in Hemet, according to a preliminary police report.
Samuel Ramirez, a resident of Moreno Valley, was pronounced dead at the Riverside University Health System Medical Center late Thursday, the coroner's office reported.
The preliminary report from the Hemet Police Department indicated that around 10 p.m. on Thursday, Ramirez was driving a silver Honda Accord westbound on Stetson Avenue, just west of Kirby Street, at "a high rate of speed" when he lost control of the vehicle and skidded sideways into oncoming traffic.
A blue Mazda CX3 collided with the passenger side of the Honda Accord, according to the report.
Ramirez "reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt. There is no suspicion of drugs/alcohol at this time; however, excessive speed appears to be a factor in this collision," police said.
Ramirez was the sole occupant of the Honda. The driver of the Mazda, also the sole occupant, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
Eastbound and westbound lanes of Stetson Avenue, between Sanderson Avenue and Kirby Street, were closed for approximately five hours during the accident investigation.
