The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) issued a statement following the tragic death of Arturo Luis Garcia, a young 22-year-old corrections officer from Porterville, who died in a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 65, south of Sherwood Avenue, on May 29, 2024.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, around 6:22 p.m., officers responded to the scene of the accident on Highway 65, south of Sherwood Avenue. According to the CHP's preliminary investigation, the driver of a Toyota, identified as Garcia, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 65 in an attempt to overtake northbound traffic. In his attempt to pass, he collided head-on with an oncoming car, resulting in a multi-vehicle accident.
The coroner officially identified Arturo Luis Garcia on May 30. Garcia had begun his career as a corrections officer in November 2023 and was assigned to Salinas Valley State Prison in March 2024, according to the CDCR's statement. Despite his short career, it was marked by a commitment to safety and rehabilitation within California's prison system.
