Tragedy in Irvine
A man tragically lost his life in Irvine after being involved in a rollover accident with a hit-and-run vehicle. On May 9, 2024, at 4:32 p.m., the Irvine Police Department (IPD) and the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) responded to reports of a single-vehicle rollover collision near Culver Drive and Trabuco Road.
Initial investigation determined that the victim, identified as Allen Yangkaou Lee, 67 years old and a resident of Irvine, was driving his 2004 Toyota Corolla northbound on Culver Drive towards Trabuco Road. At the moment his vehicle entered the intersection, a driver in a Honda Civic made a right turn against a red light from Trabuco Road onto northbound Culver Drive. This sudden turn forced the Toyota driver to swerve, resulting in loss of control of the vehicle. As a consequence, the Toyota crashed violently into the center median of Culver Drive, a tree, and finally a light pole before coming to rest upside down.
Despite rescue efforts by Orange County firefighters, the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition and unfortunately succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident.
Authorities are now searching for the hit-and-run driver of the Honda Civic, described as a silver or beige vehicle from the years 2008 to 2011. The car features sport-style decals on the lower doors and red material is observed on the vehicle's door handles.
Any witnesses to the accident or individuals with information about the hit-and-run driver or vehicle are urged to contact Detective Christopher Ostrowski at 949-724-7047. IPD's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
