Emergency in Riverside
Chaos ensued on Highway 60 in Riverside when a wrong-way driver crashed into multiple vehicles, leaving three people injured. Reports indicate that the driver was first spotted by the California Highway Patrol just after 2:15 a.m. on Highway 215, traveling northbound in southbound lanes before colliding with a car on the transition ramp to Highway 60.
The driver continued on the wrong path, traveling eastbound in westbound lanes of Highway 60, at which point they collided head-on with two other vehicles. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction while sparks flew from one of the tires.
"I saw headlights coming towards me and for a second, I thought I was the one on the wrong side, but then I realized I was on the on-ramp," said Brian Virgen. "My reaction was to swerve right, hit the brakes, and honk the horn."
Firefighters had to extricate one person involved in the crash. Authorities reported that the suspect fled on foot from a black Dodge and was eventually found and arrested off the highway.
The driver faces charges of driving under the influence and fleeing the accident scene. Two victims sustained serious injuries, and a third suffered moderate injuries.
