Captured in West Covina
A vehicle theft suspect who led authorities in Southern California on a high-speed pursuit before it ended in a violent rollover crash was arrested Tuesday in West Covina.
La Verne Police Department officers received information from authorities in Upland that a male suspect and a female passenger in a stolen vehicle were driving in the area of Williams Avenue and Foothill Avenue around 4 p.m., LAVPD said in a press release.
The driver failed to obey when police attempted to stop traffic and led authorities on a pursuit onto the westbound 10 Freeway.
During the pursuit, the passenger attempted to exit the vehicle several times but was forced back inside by the driver, according to police. After some time, the suspect slowed the vehicle enough for the woman to jump out.
The man continued the pursuit on and off the 10 Freeway and through the streets of West Covina, even entering the parking lot of an Ikea store. After exiting the parking lot, the suspect collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Barranca and Garvey Avenues, causing the suspect's vehicle to overturn and come to rest on its side.
Aerial images of the crash captured by Sky5 showed a heavy police and paramedic presence at the scene where debris scattered across the roadway due to the rollover crash.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, according to police.
Authorities did not say whether the driver the suspect collided with suffered injuries or if there was significant damage to their vehicle. No information was provided about the female passenger.
The suspect is expected to face charges of felony evasion, domestic violence, and false imprisonment.
