Tragedy in Fresno
A tragic accident occurred Tuesday morning in Fresno, leaving one person dead. The incident took place after 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Dickenson and Barstow avenues. According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a woman driving a Hyundai Sonata southbound on Dickenson Avenue failed to stop at the mandatory stop. Conversely, Barstow Avenue had no stop sign.
As a result, a 45-year-old man driving a GMC Sierra westbound on Barstow Avenue could not avoid the Hyundai and collided at the intersection. The woman, later identified as 65-year-old Elida Fernandez, a resident of Fresno, was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial reports indicated Fernandez was 76 years old, but that information was corrected on Wednesday.
The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. All parties involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to have been a factor in this crash, but toxicology results from the Coroner's Office are pending. The investigation is ongoing.
