Tragedy in Pomona
Three women tragically lost their lives in Pomona, California, after their vehicle collided with a suspected drunk driver. Alejandra Olaez, 33, her sister-in-law Yesenia Olaez, also 33, and family friend Lorena Morales, 58, died in the accident. According to the Pomona Police Department's statement, the crash occurred Saturday night, when "all parties involved were moderately to severely injured."
Pomona PD officers and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene, but unfortunately, two passengers could not survive their injuries on site. Additionally, "3 other individuals from one of the vehicles were transported to a nearby hospital, where one of the involved drivers unfortunately succumbed to their injuries."
The driver of the other car, who was the sole occupant of an SUV, was identified as 36-year-old Victor Siharath. It was determined at the scene that he was driving under the influence and was arrested for felony DUI, the police statement added.
Subsequently, Siharath was charged with three counts of murder and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on March 28 at the Pomona Courthouse, according to a press release from Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón.
The three victims were returning from Morales' granddaughter's baby shower in Moreno Valley when the incident occurred, according to ABC7. Morales was driving the car with her husband, Juan Garcia, in the front passenger seat when the crash happened. Garcia was transported to a hospital in critical condition, while Alejandra's 12-year-old daughter, Naomi, was also taken to the hospital and placed in the intensive care unit, ABC7 continued.
Yesenia, Alejandra's sister-in-law, was also in the process of adopting her 11-year-old nephew, according to ABC7. "She was a loving mother," said Brian Gonzalez, Yesenia's nephew, at a vigil on Sunday according to the outlet. "I feel like her time was too short. Even though I know she died peacefully and she died loving me. She wanted to see me grow up."
"There's nothing else I can say about her," said Blanca Gonzalez about her sister to KTLA 5. "She was the best sister... and the best person in our family."
