A 28-year-old man from Rancho Cucamonga, California, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for a series of dramatic events that unfolded on December 26, 2022, in Yosemite National Park. The man is accused of stealing a car belonging to a park ranger, which ultimately led to a high-speed chase and a harrowing plunge off a cliff.
According to prosecutors, the incident began when a park employee pulled over to the side of the road to remove a bike from the roadway. Seizing the opportunity, the man allegedly stole the employee's car and embarked on a reckless escape attempt.
The chase took a dangerous turn when the man drove the stolen car onto the Ferguson Slide bridge, going against traffic and eventually colliding head-on with another vehicle. Despite this collision, the man continued driving until he reached the edge of a cliff, where he drove off and fell approximately 200 feet to the bottom of a canyon.
Remarkably, the man survived the fall and was subsequently arrested. He now faces serious charges, including theft of personal property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and fleeing or eluding a police officer. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 13 years in federal prison and fined $510,000.
