Fatal Head-On Crash on SR-246
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has disclosed additional information about a fatal traffic collision that occurred in Lompoc on Sunday afternoon at 3:36 p.m.
According to the CHP report, a 43-year-old man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was driving a 1997 SAAB sedan traveling westbound on SR-246, located west of Mission Gate Road, at an unspecified speed.
Simultaneously, a 28-year-old Solvang resident was operating a 2023 Chevy pickup truck heading eastbound on the same highway at an estimated speed of 50 mph.
Per the CHP statement, the driver of the SAAB inexplicably crossed over the solid double yellow lines separating the westbound and eastbound lanes, resulting in roughly half of the vehicle traversing into the eastbound lane.
The SAAB continued in this manner until colliding head-on with the front of the Chevy truck. Subsequently, the SAAB veered westward and eventually came to a stop on its wheels, partially obstructing the roadway and the shoulder. Conversely, the Chevy spun in a counterclockwise direction after the impact.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage to their front ends, and tragically, the SAAB driver was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. On the other hand, the Chevy driver managed to extricate themselves from the vehicle and was transported to Lompoc Medical Center with severe injuries.
A segment of SR-246 was temporarily closed to facilitate the investigation conducted by the California Highway Patrol.
