In a harrowing incident during the Friday evening commute, a fiery, chain-reaction collision on I-15 in Corona resulted in two people sustaining minor injuries. The crash, which occurred around 6:18 pm in the northbound lanes at Magnolia Avenue, led to the closure of all lanes of the Interstate 15 Freeway for over five hours.
The sequence of events unfolded when a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter medical van, carrying oxygen tanks, collided with the rear of a Subaru sedan. The impact of the collision then caused the Subaru to collide with a semi-tractor trailer. The collision had catastrophic consequences as the oxygen canisters in the medical van exploded upon impact, setting off a massive fire that engulfed both the van and the Subaru. The flames even extended to nearby trees and brush.
The immediate response to the incident came from the Corona Fire Department, with Battalion Chief Ryan Rolston confirming that two individuals were injured, but their injuries were fortunately minor. They were transported to the hospital for medical attention.
As a result of the fiery collision, traffic on I-15 was diverted off at Magnolia Avenue, and motorists were allowed to use the 91 Express/Toll Lanes without charge, as per the California Highway Patrol's instructions.
The closure of all lanes due to the accident lasted until 11:38 pm, when the California Highway Patrol announced the reopening of the freeway.
