Tragic DUI Crash
A 28-year-old woman named Angela Hays from Corona has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) after allegedly causing a three-vehicle crash that resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad.
The incident occurred around 3:49 a.m. on a Saturday when officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a multi-vehicle collision on a stretch of freeway in Carlsbad, north of Palomar Airport Road.
Angela Hays was driving a gray Hyundai sedan in the southbound lanes of I-5 when, for reasons still under investigation, she collided with a green Jeep Grand Cherokee, causing the Jeep to overturn. Following this, a white Nissan Altima collided with the overturned Jeep, according to a statement from the CHP.
Tragically, the female passenger in the Jeep succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the male driver was transported to a hospital, where he later passed away. Both victims were residents of Richmond, located in Contra Costa County.
The male driver of the Nissan sustained major but non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to a hospital.
Angela Hays, who reported no injuries herself, was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI and was booked into the Vista Detention Facility. She potentially faces multiple charges, including felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The collision had a significant impact on traffic, with the roadway affected until approximately 9 a.m. as authorities conducted their investigation. Officials are urging anyone with information about the accident to contact the CHP at 760-643-3400.
