Chico, California - A tragic incident unfolded this morning as a person lost their life in a car collision with a tree, according to Chico police. The incident occurred at 7:47 a.m. on the Esplanade at 11th Avenue in Chico. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they immediately initiated emergency extrication efforts, but unfortunately, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. In response to this devastating accident, the Esplanade has been closed between the Lindo Channel Bridge and 10th Avenue. The closure is to facilitate the Chico Police Major Accident Investigation Team's thorough investigation into the crash. It is strongly advised for motorists to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or possesses information pertaining to it is urged to contact the Chico Police Traffic Line at (530) 897-4970. The intersection at Esplanade and W. 11th Ave. has since been reopened but is currently operating under flashing light control, a measure expected to remain in effect until the end of Tuesday. The identity of the victim has been confirmed as Neff Haskell, a 74-year-old resident of Chico. Preliminary information suggests that Haskell may have experienced a medical condition prior to the collision; however, the precise cause of his death will only be determined upon completion of the autopsy. Chico Police have also disclosed that the traffic signal at the Esplanade and W. 11th Ave. intersection will remain in "flash mode" until next Tuesday, January 16, as the signal pole undergoes reconstruction. Motorists are reminded that a flashing red signal mandates a complete stop, treating the intersection as a stop sign.
