Tragedy Strikes Antioch

In a tragic incident that has left the Antioch community reeling, a hit-and-run driver is being sought after a Friday night collision claimed the lives of two young brothers, aged 12 and 13, just a short distance from their home. The incident occurred at the intersection of G Street and West Sixth Street, near downtown Antioch, shortly after 11 p.m. Maurice Howell, an eyewitness, recounted seeing a speeding black SUV moments before the devastating crash. He rushed to the scene after hearing the collision and found the father, who had been driving the car struck by the SUV, pleading for help to rescue his sons trapped inside the vehicle. Howell and others attempted to extract the children from the vehicle. They struggled with the rear door and eventually succeeded by opening the front door. The father, frantic with worry, even attempted to place his son under water from a nearby hydrant, hoping to revive him from the impact of the crash. Tragically, the efforts were in vain, and the child did not respond. Antioch police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to determine whether the SUV's excessive speed was a contributing factor to the collision, or if the blue car involved failed to stop at a stop sign. Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV fled the scene on foot, intensifying efforts to locate them. Residents in the area have voiced concerns about speeding and reckless driving, with some expressing worry about drivers ignoring stop signs. Alecia Bryant, a neighbor who lives close to the intersection, emphasized the need for caution, especially at stop signs, given the frequent disregard for them by drivers. Maurice Howell, who offered support to the grieving father, expressed empathy, recognizing the profound pain and loss experienced by the family, particularly during the holiday season. As the search for the hit-and-run driver continues, authorities urge anyone with information to contact Lieutenant Rick Martin at 925-779-6972 or the Antioch Police Department non-emergency line at (925) 778-2441.
