Fatal Accident in Pleasanton: Three Dead and Six Injured in I-680 Collision

A devastating accident on Interstate 680 in Pleasanton, California, resulted in the loss of three lives and injuries to six individuals, including two infants, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The incident unfolded at approximately 2:30 p.m. on a Monday when a Honda Pilot, heading southbound near the Sunol-Castlewood exit, experienced a blowout in its right rear tire. The driver, communicating with CHP officers, revealed that in an attempt to avoid descending down an embankment on the west shoulder, they swerved to the left. Regrettably, this maneuver caused the vehicle's left side tires to ride up the jersey wall, separating the east lanes. Subsequently, the car lost control, veering to the right and crossing all lanes before ultimately traversing the right shoulder. The vehicle soared over a sloped curb and collided with a tree on the right shoulder, then descended approximately 20 feet to the base, as confirmed by the Alameda County Fire Department's report. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered two deceased adults and an individual who had been ejected from the vehicle through the rear window, having not worn a seatbelt. Additionally, a person seated in the right rear without restraints was also found. The driver and two infants were rushed to Oakland Hospital and are currently in stable condition with minor injuries. Tragically, another individual transported to the hospital with major injuries succumbed later, according to the CHP. Another patient, suffering from a broken pelvis, was taken to San Jose Regional Hospital, admitting to not wearing a seatbelt. In response to the accident, a Sig-Alert was issued, and the right two lanes of southbound I-680 near Pleasanton were closed for approximately four hours on Monday afternoon, as confirmed by CHP Officer Tyler Hahn. Hahn emphasized, "This crash is still under investigation. Based on statements from those involved and examination on scene, this is a dark reminder that seatbelts save lives."
