Tragedy in San Ysidro, San Diego County

In a tragic incident that disrupted the morning commute, multiple lanes of the northbound Interstate 5 in San Ysidro were temporarily closed after a pedestrian was fatally struck by several vehicles. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred shortly after 3:10 a.m. in the far right lane of the highway near the Dairy Mart Road exit. The pedestrian, described as an adult male, had entered the lane and was struck by a Mitsubishi sedan. Following the initial collision, the 75-year-old driver from Tijuana pulled off the freeway and into an Arco Gas Station to call for assistance. Unfortunately, before officers arrived at the scene, several more vehicles struck the pedestrian. CHP Sergeant Kyle Johnson stated, "At this time, we're still conducting the investigation, but we do believe additional vehicles struck the pedestrian after he was initially hit. Several vehicles did pull over, and our officers contacted those individuals." Regrettably, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities are currently withholding his identity pending notification of his family. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported as a result of the crash. The CHP San Diego area is leading the investigation, and it remains unknown whether the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In contrast, inebriation has been ruled out as a contributing factor for the Mitsubishi driver who initially struck the pedestrian. A SigAlert was issued around 5 a.m. to notify motorists of prolonged traffic delays in the area. According to CalTrans San Diego, the right three lanes of the highway were blocked off for CHP's investigation and the clean-up of the incident. Thankfully, all lanes were reopened shortly after 7 a.m., following approximately four hours of closure. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact CHP San Diego at 858-293-6000 to assist with their investigation.
