Shock in Orange, Orange County
In Orange, a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol was arrested after a tragic hit-and-run accident that claimed the lives of two people.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday on North Shattuck Place, near Highway 55, according to an Instagram post from the Orange Police Department. Investigators say 26-year-old Humberto Flores was driving a Ford F-250 when he collided with a parked Chevy Silverado.
Two men standing near the Chevy were struck by the driver, according to the police. Both died at the scene of the accident.
Family and friends have identified one of the victims as Manuel Ortiz.
Maria Grant has been friends with Ortiz for almost 30 years.
“I had great expectations for you, but he was always there to listen to you or help you in whatever you needed,” said Grant. “No matter the time, he was always available.”
She described Ortiz as a hardworking man who loved cars and was dedicated to his five children and grandchildren.
“He always pushed forward and to know that this ended because of a drunk driver really breaks my heart,” Grant said.
“Even on Thanksgiving, when you should be with your family eating or doing whatever, he wanted to make someone happy and return their truck or whatever it was he believed he had been working on,” Grant added.
Police reported that Flores fled the scene on foot, but was apprehended shortly after.
He faces multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing death, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The families of the victims are urging the community to think twice before getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking.
