Collision in Lamont, Kern County
A tragic accident occurred early in the morning just outside of Lamont, leaving three people dead in an area that is unfortunately familiar with fatal accidents.
The crash is still being investigated by the California Highway Patrol. The incident was reported shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Di Giorgio and South Edison roads outside of Lamont. Highway Patrol officers confirmed that two vehicles collided and three victims lost their lives.
A white Volkswagen and a red Jeep were involved, and both ended up on the train tracks. Family members of the victims showed up on Friday afternoon and placed candles and memories in honor of the three women who died in the accident.
The accident victims are described as a woman in her 50s, another in her 30s, and one in her 20s, who were on their way to work at Tasteful Selections.
"We determined that one of the vehicles, the red Jeep, failed to obey the stop sign, did not stop, and collided with the side of the white Volkswagen. Unfortunately, all three occupants of the Volkswagen died," said Sergeant Kent Kniffen of the CHP. "There was only one occupant in the red Jeep, a man, who suffered minor injuries."
Traffic was closed for approximately three hours this morning. This type of accident is not unusual for the area, known as the Arvin Triangle. The Arvin Triangle is located south of Bakersfield, including Lamont and Arvin, and has been the scene of nearly 100 fatal accidents in the past seven years.
The coroner's office has not yet identified the three victims, nor has the driver been identified, who could face charges ranging from involuntary manslaughter to murder, according to the CHP.
