[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On Thursday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents announced that an immigration sweep targeting so-called sanctuary jurisdictions was conducted over the previous few days. According to ICE, 167 immigrants were arrested in Los Angeles and surrounding communities. The target of the raids were purportedly undocumented immigrants with criminal records or who had been identified as gang members. ICE stated that Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients were not targeted in the raid.
Sanctuary jurisdictions, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and every county government in California, limit the cooperation between law enforcement and immigration authorities. There is no clear definition of what a sanctuary city is and policies vary between cities. In the city of Los Angeles, law enforcement will not keep undocumented inmates jailed beyond their release date without a warrant.
In the recent raids, more than 450 people were arrested across the country. Of those arrested, about 1 in 3 did not have a criminal record.
