Fatal Accident on I-5, San Diego County
Two people died in a rollover accident last weekend on the Interstate 5, authorities reported.
The crash occurred on Saturday around 3:02 a.m. on Interstate 5 near E Street in the Chula Vista area, said Salvador Castro from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in a press release on Tuesday.
A 27-year-old woman driving a black BMW X5 was traveling with a 22-year-old male passenger on I-5 northbound when the BMW veered off the road and overturned, according to the CHP. The accident caused the roof of the BMW to detach, ejecting both the driver and the passenger from the vehicle.
Moments later, a 28-year-old man driving a white Ford Mustang struck the rear of the overturned BMW that was blocking the road, authorities said.
When officers arrived at the scene, the occupants of the BMW were pronounced dead, confirmed Castro. The Ford driver, who was determined not to be under the influence, remained at the accident site and cooperated with law enforcement.
The authorities closed the three right lanes of I-5 for approximately three hours.
The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification to the families.
