[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced that over the New Year's holiday, 936 people were arrested on highways across the state for driving under the influence (DUI). The reported time frame of the arrests was Friday evening (6:01 p.m.) through Monday night (11:59 p.m.). The number of arrests was a 22 percent increase over the same holiday weekend last year.
The number of DUI arrests was not a significant increase over the 2017 Christmas holiday weekend, where 917 people were arrested under suspicion of DUI. The statistics released by CHP do not offer insight into whether the arrests were alcohol-related, marijuana-related, or both. With the legalization of recreational marijuana, CHP has sounded alarms in an attempt to prevent anyone under the influence of cannabis from getting behind the wheel. Drivers suspected of driving while high will initially be given field sobriety tests until a clear legal standard for marijuana intoxication has been developed.
